Let’s talk about illegal wars

The war in Iraq is not illegal. I’m sorry.

Bush obtained permission from Congress to use force both in the fight against international terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. The populist back-pedalling of Democrats is shameful; one need only look at the votes. Hillary Clinton, with her innate and entrenched ability to take any truth and spin it into a Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy, invented the “Bush Lied” escpape route. Many a jelly-spined Democrat made use of this exit, and now stand proudly outside the building watching it burn.

If we want to speak of illegal wars, let’s talk about the war in Kosovo for which Clinton did not seek the approval of Congress. Where were the protesters? Where was the hateful speech and the talk of war crimes? It says right in our Constitution that the president must seek approvalĀ  from Congress to go to war.

The war is legal. It was approved by Congress and properly declared. Iraq also declared war back, showing that they accepted this as well.

But, the fact that it is a legal war does not entail that it was started for the right reasons, that it was a good (in both the moral and prudential sense) idea, or that it was properly justified.

However, as McCain points out, we are there now and running away would be neither moral nor prudent.
